Firewire Spun Honey

Dan Mann's refined, high-performance groveler based on the Spitfire.

Introducing the Spun Honey by Dan Mann, a refined, high-performance groveler based on the Spitfire, shaped for freesurfer and firefighter, Kevin Schulz.

At its core, the Spun Honey is super user-friendly and has a giant sweet spot, the shape features a diamond tail for snappy pivots, added bite, and smooth release, and creates a responsive feel that thrives in punchy peaks and quick transitions. Designed for the fast, shifting walls of beach breaks, it blends the proven DNA of Firewire's iconic Spitfire with modern updates tuned for today's most explosive surfers. As Dan explains, "surfers as a population are generally getting better. And boards are evolving similarly, they're getting more refined too."

The Spun Honey is based on Dan's popular Spitfire model, a short, compact groveler with the wide point a touch towards the tail from center but further forward to the nose than the Sweet Potato, with a tapered diamond tail. Underneath, the bottom contour is a pretty aggressive double concave set within a solid single concave, similar to the bottom of the Sweet Potato, with the double running further forward to the nose than most boards. This double concave bottom contour delivers speed, lift, and fluid rail-to-rail performance, benefits Dan learned from his S Boss and Boss Up shapes with a similar bottom. Dan's included his famous step rail from the Spitfire, also featured on the Mashup, that allows him to hide a lot of volume in the center of the shape while maintaining bladey, knifey rails.

In terms of where the Spun Honey fits in Dan's range of shapes, it offers more performance than his Sweet Potato but less performance than his Dominator 2.0. Whether you're groveling gutless waves, threading shorebreak barrels, or launching into air sections, the Spun Honey delivers a fast, forgiving ride with a spicy edge - an ideal everyday board for surfers pushing performance in weak, everyday conditions.

Pair with Dan's Spun Honey Fin Set for the best experience, a low profile raked template designed specifically for the Spun Honey shape.

Wave Type

The Spun Honey is a groveler that's all about pushing performance, so it's meant for small, weak, gutless waves. That said, our team has been pushing it in head-high to overhead, hollow conditions and it's been holding and working well. Whether you're groveling gutless waves, threading shorebreak barrels, or launching into air sections, the Spun Honey is the shape you'll want to keep in your trunk to have fun in any conditions.

Board Features

The Spun Honey is based on Dan's popular Spitfire model, with modern updates tuned for today's most explosive surfers. It's a short, compact groveler with the wide point a touch towards the tail from center but further forward to the nose than the Sweet Potato, and a slightly more pulled in outline than the Sweet Potato. Featuring a bullet nose and diamond tail, with a similar curve to the Baked Potato. Because the tail is such a wide planning area, Dan's idea to have a singular point off the tail be a fulcrum, so that when you tip it over the tail directs water off the singular point instead of making the tail too slidey. The rails are nice and sensitive like a high-performance shape, but the step in the rails hides or masks a lot of extra volume in the center with its flat deck. There's also lots of foam under the chest via the step in the rails, but not too much so the board still turns over well in the pocket.

Helium Technology

Helium Core Technology

Our best-selling technology, with a new updated look. A stringerless EPS core with flex controlled at the rails made from Paulownia and Balsa wood and our proprietary deckskins - this construction is light and lively underfoot, and excellent at generating speed in everyday waves.
