SELECTING YOUR BOARD: KEY FACTORS TO CONSIDER
1. Volume & Float (Litres)
Volume determines how easily your board paddles, catches waves, and stays stable.
- More volume = easier paddling, higher wave count and stability - ideal for beginners in small, weaker waves.
- Less volume = easier duck-diving, tighter turns, more speed, performance and greater response - ideal for experienced surfers in powerful waves.
2. Local Wave Conditions
Are you surfing soft beach breaks or punchy reef breaks?
A forgiving hybrid or mid-length handles everyday UK and Irish conditions best, while a performance shortboard is better when the swell hits.
3. Construction: Foam, PU, or Epoxy
- Softboards/Foamies: safer on impact, durable and high-buoyancy built for learning and stress-free summer sessions.
- PU (Polyurethane/Polyester Resin): the traditional build offering a classic, smooth flex pattern cutting well through choppy conditions.
- Epoxy/EPS: lighter, stiffer, and highly durable. Provides extra spring and speed in softer surf.
4. Performance: Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced Level
- Beginner: 7ft to 9ft softboards such as our Surfworx range. Offers maximum volume and width for stability and balance - ideal for building confidence and increasing wave-count.
- Intermediate: 6ft6 to 7ft6 midlength boards, fish shapes or wide hybrids. Balances paddling-power and smooth manoeuvrability when catching unbroken waves and working on bottom turns and cutbacks.
- Advanced: <6ft6 shortboards with volume tailored to your body weight. Offers refined rails and single-to-double concave bottoms perfect for responsiveness, precision, high-speed sections, carving and tube riding.
